Sala Ayutthaya Hotel – designer Onion Studio

This striking hotel is named after the indigenous orange-flowered Sala tree and the location in Ayutthaya. Across the Chao Phraya river is the historic city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes the Putthai Sawan Temple built in 1353 AD.

Thai-based firm Onion designed this 26-room hotel boutique hotel as a study in contrasts:  new architecture aside an ancient city, a natural brick exterior with a minimalist contemporary interior.

Fluted brick walls also undulate along the interior’s corridor to create views of the sky and a shifting shadow play throughout the day – an effect that delighted Onion’s architects, “The curved shadows from the two sides normally meet on the floor at about eleven o'clock in the morning. They transform the atmosphere of the space at different times of the day.” These organic curves juxtapose with the clean, white lines of the interior – a simple courtyard with granite and marble – lined pools connects the sleek guestrooms.
