Report From Milan - Trends from Euroluce 2013

In what has become our semi-annual tradition - and one of our design clients’ favorites!  - the Lusive Team is presenting, in 3 parts, our report on lighting and design trends from the triple threat/ thrill that is Euroluce Lighting Fair, Tortona Design Week and I Saloni Milano 2013.

As always, there was plenty to talk about! It is our pleasure to pass on the hot trends, our ‘most wanted’ and just plain cool designs from the show.

                                                              PART ONE - LEDs

DECORATIVE

While LED technology has been progressing in leaps and bounds over the last few years, we really noticed for the first time the widespread use of LEDs in decorative lighting – the venerable Venetian glassblowers Barovier e Toso continue to lead the pack with modern interpretations of their classic designs that now incorporate LED lamping options

NEW TECH

OLEDs - The latest in LED technology, organic light-emitting diodes OLEDs are solid-state devices composed of thin films of organic molecules that create light with the application of electricity. OLEDs can provide brighter, crisper displays and use less power than conventional LEDs or liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used today. We saw these used by various decorative lighting manufacturers at the show – as flat light panels, as desk lamps and, most impressively, by Philips in their LIVING SCULPTURE designed by Christopher Bauder of WHITE Void.

We loved Toshiba’s collaboration with Tokyo- and Milan-based design practice IXI and lighting designer Izumi Okayasu; SOFFIO (breath or breathing in Italian) was a study of  “Single lights and the beauty they produce, express that little energy can generate a comfortable environment.  Each light is a metaphor of the joy that resides in one's heart.”

OH WOW

Every year at I Saloni there are a few things that make us go “OH Wow!”

This year we experienced a series of interactive/ immersive electronic landscapes that were truly amazing.

Visitors to Samsung’s interactive experience ‘What A Wonderful World’ at Zona Tortona were issued digital wands to move and manipulate images on the LED display walls.

And who doesn't want to be an angel? - if only for a moment! At Cotto's 'Caverna Nirvana' we entered an interactive world where we could be transformed!
