CRG Architecture Consultants’ Solution for overcrowded Slums in Mumbai

A Spanish firm, CRG architecture consultants, with offices in Barcelona, New York, Lagos and Shenzhen, has proposed a solution for the ovepopulated Mumbai Dharavi slum, known as the most crowded ghetto in the world. The project suggests densely stacked recycled shipping containers that form two towers, 400 and 200 metres high, supported by concrete structures. The containers will be assembled with their edges overlapping creating a cylindrical structure whereas gaps between them will make natural ventilation. Together, towers would hold 2500 containers and accommodate 5000 people. Living inside the towers will be organized in different sizes of units from studio flats up to 3 bedroom apartments, arranged in one or joined containers. Columns of vertically stacked containers would hold an elevator within while other vacant containers could be used for communication, medical service, schools, stores and small markets.

"Cities are facing unprecedented demographic, environmental, economic, social and spatial challenges. There has been a phenomenal shift towards urbanisation, with six out of every 10 people in the world expected to reside in urban areas by 2030. In the absence of effective urban planning, the consequences of this rapid urbanisation will be dramatic. In many places around the world, the effects can already be felt " said architect Carlos Gomez.
